Matthew 28:19-20

Three Points:
We Ought to Make Disciples
We Ought to Teach & Observe
We Ought to Be Witnesses
Introduction:
The message this morning is kind of a pre-cursor to the series on Sunday nights we begin tonight on S.S. and groups’ purpose and mission.
I began to think about what really drives us… What scripture really nails it down or summarizes our purpose and mission.
I was asked recently by a person who develops church software…What is your vision for the church…. I summarized it in one word- “Discipleship”
Discipleship encapsulates everything we are to do and be according to Jesus.
All our lives we have heard the phrase… “You Ought to…”
As children…
As young adults…
As parents…
As church members:
“We Ought To…”
1. We ought to be teaching the bible
2. We ought to be growing in number
3. We ought to be training teachers
4. We ought to be caring for needs in our classes
5. We ought to be involved in missions
6. We ought to be tithing and giving offerings
7. We ought to be worshiping
Illus.
If you have ever navigated through rivers, oceans etc., you know you want to stay in the main channel.
A good captain uses plotting maps, compasses, radar systems and radio tools.
A captain wants to protect the ship, protect the manpower, and protect the cargo.
A captain also wants to end at the targeted destination.
We too, as the church, must be like a good captain.
Trying to be on the right course, stay the course, not leave the course, not run out of fuel and end at the desired destination!
The message this morning will put us on the right course!
We Ought to Make Disciples V.19
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Greek- mathētḗs, properly, a learner; a disciple, a follower of Christ who learns the doctrines of Scripture and the lifestyle they require; someone catechized with proper instruction from the Bible with its necessary follow-through (life-applications).
Notice, we are to make disciples…
It’s not just going to happen. Disciples aren’t born. Disciples are made!
Where? V. 19 says all nations… Everyone we come in contact with…
And Baptize them in the trinity…
Baptism is important
Baptism is your first opportunity to witness.
If you haven’t been baptized it’s less likely that you’ve been a witness.
We Ought to Teach & Observe V.20
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Macarthur or Jeremiah quote… “we are obese as the church. We have enough teaching to last us a lifetime.”
What is he saying?
He is echoing what we learn in the book of James, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.”
How do we make disciples? The same way we train others for any other task.
Remember more is caught than taught…
Educate, Demonstrate, Evaluate
If we aren’t teaching and observing, we aren’t discipling!
III. We Ought to Be Witnesses/ Acts 1:8
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Notice bulletin… “Enter to Witness, Depart to Witness” We need constant reminders.
Know that you have the power to witness through the holy spirit…
Many people say, I can’t… You can’t but he can… The power of the Holy Spirit is matchless!
What are we to tell? The good news… It’s good news, not bad news. It’s easy to tell good news!
Tell the good news that you have experienced.
Action Steps:
Evaluate if you are making disciples…. In other words are you duplicating yourself?
Demonstrate… mentor someone… lead someone
Go… Everywhere to Everyone
Every believer a witness… Tell your story/His story
PRAY
Invitation
“Try God”
“Are you born again?”
Is your name written in the Lambs Book of Life?
“Have you surrendered/repented to Jesus?
